Lefkakia Walk and Beautiful Views
1 hr. 30 minutes at a moderate pace with time to examine
flowers, look out all around Lefkakia and surroundings to
identify landmarks and spot tracks to try out another day.
You can also drive up to the ridge and amble along the ridge
without having the walk up.
Beautiful views of Asini, Drepano, the Palimidi and the Agolikos
Gulf. From the ridge, there are also beautiful views inland
over several ridges to Mt. Arachneo. In spring, wild flowers
line the roads and fill the fields--wild thyme in purple bloom.
The orange trees are beginning to blossom and the fragrance
is wonderful
We took part of this walk in late May 2002 in the late afternoon
and it was a hot walk due to the sun on the face of the hill.
(On a sunny, hot day it would be best done in the morning.)
We also did this walk on April 17, 2003 on a cool and rainy
spring day at mid-day.
From the house turn left. Turn right just as you come to
the town hall (before the achaic temple). Walk along up the
town hill, over the hill and past the life sized plaster elephant
on your left (this is still an unraveled mystery). Here are
a few new construction sites for vacationers. Continue on
the road, through the olive groves, down a bit and then you
are on your way up to the ridge behind the town. It is open
and wild. When you reach the top (perhaps 20 minutes) at the
most picturesque point, you find--a soccer field (fenced in
with a hole in the fence if you want to play). You can see
in all directions.
From the soccer field you find a road leading to the right.
This takes you along the ridge to the east and toward the
sea. Ironically, this beautiful spot is where a dump was.
It appears to be no longer in use—apart from some unauthorized
(a la Alice’s Restaurant) construction debris. Stay
on the road and it comes up to a geological marker. The track
winds further along the ridge where there are plantings of
eucalyptus and pine trees and a loop to the eastern point
where you have a full view of the sea.
We tried unsuccessfully to find a different route down so
as to make this a loop walk—but we leave this challenge
to others.
