Walks In and Around Napflio
Palimidi fortress--About 900 steps up and it closes at 6:00
p.m.
Napflio Promenade to the right (from the city beach parking
lot) around the point to Napflio and good eating—This
is only about a mile on a paved walkway. The surface is paved
with flagstones and you are by the sea the whole way. We like
to park at the city beach which is just beyond the foot of
the Palimidi. It is a fun place to hang out and have a coffee.
The Greek people use the pebble beach and it has a nice atmosphere.
You can begin the promenade here by walking to your right.
It is level grade. Just before you reach Napflio, there is
a stone restaurant on your left right on the sea. We ended
up there for lunch on a Sunday on a gray day in April and
it was very festive, full of Greeks and serving wonderful
fish dishes to families. (It reminded me of Tavern on the
Green in Central Park on a Sunday in April.) Alternatively,
you can get to this restaurant at the far end of the city
pier.
Napflio Promenade to the left to Karathona Beach and a beer.
From the city beach parking lot, you can head to your left.
The surface is a dirt road. It continues around the cliffs
under Palamidi. It’s about 3 miles this direction to
come to the beachfront tavernas on undeveloped Karathona Beach.
We did it at 6:00 p.m., had our beer at 7:00 and headed back,
walking into the setting sun. Lots of Greek people were enjoying
this walk—picking wild flowers at the end of April.
If you come to this beach by car during the day, you can rent
a lounge chair, sun and swim, and have your beer and calamari
served to you on the beach.
Far end of Karathona beach—Beautiful at sunset. Drive
the good road to Karathona but continue beyond Karathona.
Lovers park here at sunset. On the left is a trail marked
Pros Agia Konstantinos. It takes you on a coastal path for
ten minutes to a little shrine church.
